Adolescent Athletes In Treatment

A select group of adolescent residential treatment centers are going above and beyond the more traditional, basic services of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Disorder Treatment.  While their primary goal of recovery remains, it seems the numerous approaches to address and support overall well-being has expanded.  Some of this growth, in an effort to foster adolescents’ well being, includes some of the more Experimental Therapy approaches, such as the increasingly popular Equine Therapy, Drama Therapy, and Music Therapy.  Supporters of these types of programs like the benefits they see by helping teens in a context and to an activity that they feel comfortable with and interested in, helping to further their overall openness and receptivity during treatment.

However, some programs are going beyond even this, such as Paradigm Malibu’s Young Athletes Program, a program that basically combines Mental Health or Substance Abuse treatment with sports psychology training.  This program is designed especially for high-performing, dedicated teen athletes, and serves to help support their continued progress during treatment, while also using their athletic interest and talents as a positive force to their overall recovery.  This is in tune with Paradigm’s overreaching treatment philosophy, which bases treatment plans on adolescents’ strengths and interests, versus their symptoms and behaviors.  Therefore, therapists try to incorporate the positive forces, already at plan in teens’ lives, such as interests in art, musical instruments, or, in this case, sports.  And beyond using the drive and interest in the sport to further the work toward recovery, the Young Athletes Program also serves to ensure that the teens’ athletic training and rigorous practice doesn’t have to suffer, while adolescents are in treatment.  To this end, the program includes a number of intensive athletic offerings, including: daily sports psychology sessions, fostered collaboration with coaches and recruiters, specific sports nutrition plans, accessibility to practice fields and/or equipment, fitness and strength training, performance enhancement drug education, FLOW for performance enhancement, and mentoring by professional athletes.  The program is directed by Dr. Michael Graham, a clinical psychologist and former Olympic athlete, who specializes in working with teens.

In addition to the benefits the Young Athletes Program offers of combining teens’ athletic interests with treatment recovery goals, is that by supporting their continued rigorous physical training regimens and practice, treatment doesn’t become a threat to the teens’ sport, but rather, a help to it.  Despite the help teens know they need, either for Substance Abuse or Mental Health struggles, it can be difficult for them to leave some of the central responsibilities of their lives in order to engage in treatment.  This is especially true for athletes, who might be afraid of falling too far behind, if they leave to get help.  The Young Athletes Program meets adolescent athletes where they are, joining them in their goals both with recovery and also, success in their sport.

Darvish Carrying Rangers’ Rotation with Harrison on DL

The Rangers have gotten off to a solid start this season, and the ballclub is collectively performing well.
